Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
