US Military Conducts Lethal Strike in Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
According to a high-ranking defense official, the American military executed a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amidst Pressure
The government has faced increasing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
While the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
