The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
