The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
