The Red Devils Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
