The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates club history in a pivotal European match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
