The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
