Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration said the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump embraced a peace initiative endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday preceded rumors that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The talk about the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
