Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
