Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
