A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
