RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
