Administration Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
